Ep.3: Q&A - Is Porn Consumption a Problem?

Tara: [00:00:00] Welcome to this Pathway to Recovery Q & A. I am Tara McCasland, and I have here with me my co-host Justin B. Thanks for being with me, Justin.

Justin: Hey, I'm excited to be here. Thanks, Tara. 

Tara: Yeah, and this being our first Q & A - this is just a short 10, max 15 minute [00:01:00] back and forth in regards to a question that we either have received from a listener or in this case, this is just a question that we know is on a lot of people's minds.

So the question that we're going to be responding to today is, “Is porn use a problem?” And you know, Justin, there's a lot of different opinions swirling around professional religious and other circles. Why even ask that question? 

Justin: I think that's an interesting question and one that I come at pretty biased from my own experience and I'll speak from my own experience.

Porn started out being a solution to the ills of life - a solution with a small “s.” And you know, something that I've shared here recently with some people is that rejection is a big negative emotion. When I feel rejected by something, [00:02:00] somebody, whatever, I feel the need to escape, and never once has porn rejected me. And so it's an easy, quick path to go back to, but it has let me down big time after each “acceptance” that happened.

So is it a problem? Yeah, it is because it's not a real solution. It's an empty, empty, counterfeit solution. Does that answer the question at all there? 

Tara: Yeah. Well, and I think we're going to kind of come at this from a different perspective than you may have heard before. We could put forward data and research that suggests that porn is harmful to mental health. It is harmful to committed relationships. It's overall harmful to society in that porn increases things like sex trafficking and there's a connection between a lot of other social ills that we're dealing with. However, I think if we come at it from [00:03:00] this perspective of not “Is porn bad?” but, “What are the fruits of porn?” You might say, if I'm understanding you right Justin, that porn was the solution that became the problem for you. 

Justin: Yeah. I think that's a pretty good way of saying it. Porn was the solution or a solution, but it was the easiest and quickest and most reliable solution to the problems that I faced in negative emotions.

But soon enough, it let me down and it became my master rather than the soother. The negative emotions I was feeling became my master because it soon moved from when I feel rejected to when I feel celebratory or when I feel sad, when I feel happy to numb and regulate any emotion that seemed to make me uncomfortable. I would retreat from those emotions back to [00:04:00] numbness basically, because feeling was too painful.

Tara: Kathy Kinghorn, who is a CSAT therapist, explained in the women's workshop this past month that addiction or addictive behaviors increase pleasure or decrease pain. And so what you're saying, Justin, really, I think speaks to that concept that the behavior, while maladaptive, becomes a way for people to deal with life, with boredom, with rejection, with anxiety. It does for a time, play this role of being a solution.

Roy Kim, who was our guest in our last episode, posted something really great some time ago on his Instagram, and I just wanted to read this. It speaks to this idea of “What is our solution when we're dealing with daily [00:05:00] life,  with the ups and downs?” He said, “When I'm hungry, I eat. When I'm thirsty, I drink. When I'm cold, I wear something. When I'm broke, I look for work. When I'm lonely, porn. When I'm anxious, porn. When I'm angry, porn. When I'm overwhelmed, porn.”

He said, it's time to reevaluate our solutions. What are your thoughts about that?

Justin: Yeah, I totally identify with that and I would add a couple more. Like I mentioned earlier, when I celebrate, porn. When I'm happy, when I'm overly happy, porn. When I feel rejected, like I mentioned, porn, any emotion. The reason why is because the addict in me likes the effect of pornography, of sex, of all of the related things there.

It takes me back to the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous on page Roman numeral 28 in the Doctor's Opinion. I wanna read a paragraph here and this also addresses [00:06:00] the question of “What does addiction talk, act, and think like?”

So I'm gonna change the pronouns in here to “I” and “me” because this pertains to me. And I would invite anybody who reads these types of things to not think about someone else, but to think about themselves.

I drink or use porn or act out, essentially because I like the effect produced by that drug of choice. The sensation is so elusive that while I admit it's injurious, I know it's injurious, I know it's not good for me - I cannot, after a time, differentiate the true from the false. That's when it becomes my master. I can't differentiate anymore. To me, my addict life seems the only normal one. It's the only one that feels right at that time. It feels safe. 

I am restless, irritable, and discontent and unless I can again, experience the sense of ease and comfort, which comes at once by taking a few drinks, looking at a few images, doing, you know, whatever [00:07:00] action I take in lust, those actions which I see others taking with impunity.

Some people can occasionally look at porn, can occasionally do things and not be addicted and just leave it alone. Unfortunately, I'm not that person. After I have succumbed to the desire again, as so many do, and the phenomenon of craving develops, I pass through the well-known stages of a spree - emerging remorseful with a firm resolution to not act out again. This is repeated over and over, and unless I can experience an entire psychic change, there is very little hope of my recovery. 

I act out because I like it. The addict likes it. No matter how much I say, “No, I don't want to like it, this is disgusting, I don't want to like it.” The truth is, I like it. It is a quick, easy solution and until I find an alternative that works every single [00:08:00] time, I'm gonna go back to this solution, you know? 

Tara: So in the explanation that Roy Kim gives to this Instagram post he says, “A porn addiction usually has little to do with being oversexed, perverted, or degenerate. It often has more to do with having found something that predictably and successfully transports us away from a problem or a mood. The bad thing is that the problem or the mood does not get addressed.”

The solution is not just stopping the porn, he said, although that is a fundamental first step, and so what I'm hearing you say is, until we find better tools, the porn or addictive behavior will continue to be the solution. Is that right? 

Justin: Yeah, that's my experience. Absolutely. I like this. The bad thing is that the problem or the mood does not get addressed when I seek to [00:09:00] escape through my drug of choice, whatever that may be. Going a little bit further down this path of, “I like the look and smell of roses. But for me, once I see a rosebush or smell of rose, I am not going to stay there and look at and smell the roses nonstop until they die in the late fall, and then more, all winter long because I can't see or smell the roses.”

But as an addict, if I can't consume my drug of choice all the time, I am gonna be depressed, I'm gonna mourn until I can get back to it. Another example: I love mowing the lawn, but once I start mowing the lawn, I'm not gonna go mow my lawn, my neighbor's lawn and every lawn that I find until I've destroyed my lawn mower.

But in lust, in sex, in pornography, I'm gonna do that. I'm just gonna keep consuming until it's destroyed everything - myself, my family, everything. And I won't be able to stop until I've exhausted everything, myself, my money, my respectability, my morals, you name it. As [00:10:00] an untreated addict, as one who has not had an entire psychic change that we talked about here, in that doctor's opinion quote, unless I maintain that entire psychic change every single day, no matter what - I throw away everything that really is most important, everything that I really love except for that sensation of escape that's so elusive. While I admit it's injurious, I cannot differentiate the truth from the false. You know, it's not an excuse because I still have a hundred percent choice to not entertain the thought or to not start the ritualization.

But that choice exists in an addict, especially an active addict, for like milliseconds. Once I start having the thought, I have to immediately change or it's gonna take me over and I will not have choice anymore. I need that entire psychic change. And we can talk about more of what that means in future episodes because there's so much to this.

Tara: Yeah. Well, going back to this [00:11:00] initial question that we are addressing, “Is porn use a problem? Is porn bad?” Well-meaning people can probably cite information that might speak to one side or the other. 

What we might invite you to do is, rather than asking that question, “Is porn bad?” - ask yourself, “What are the fruits of viewing porn?” Does it produce more or less self-respect? Does it produce more or less respect for others? Does it increase or decrease connection with God and with others, especially those who we are in committed relationships with - our spouses, our children. Does it cause us to want to be in a space where we are connecting in healthy ways or,  does it cause us to pull away and isolate? Is porn helping me to create the life I want?[00:12:00] 

Thank you Justin, I think this is something we could talk about for a long time. But I think this gives us some different ways to consider porn and how the solution became the problem and a maladaptive way of dealing with life.

Justin: Yeah, absolutely. And I do look forward to further developing this over the time that we're doing this together. This is gonna be good. Thank you so much, Tara.

Episodio 3: Preguntas y Respuestas. ¿Es el consumo del porno un problema?

Tara: Bienvenidos a este Preguntas y Respuestas del Camino Hacia La Recuperación. Yo soy Tara McCasland y me encuentro aquí con mi co-anfitrión Justin B. Gracias por estar aquí Justin.

Justin: Hola, estoy emocionado por estar aquí. Gracias, Tara.

Tara: Claro y este es nuestro primer “Preguntas-Respuestas” por lo que es un segmento corto de 10 o máximo, 15 minutos de ida y vuelta con respecto a preguntas que nosotros hemos recibido de nuestros oyentes o en este caso, esto es simplemente una pregunta que nosotros sabemos que se encuentra en la mente de muchas personas. Así que la pregunta que nosotros vamos a responder hoy es: “¿Es el uso del porno un problema?” Y tú sabes, Justin, existen muchísimas opiniones diferentes que dan vueltas en los círculos religiosos profesionales y otros círculos. ¿Por qué entonces hacer esa pregunta?

Justin: Yo creo que es una pregunta interesante, una a la que llego bastante parcial desde mi propia experiencia y por lo tanto, hablaré desde mi experiencia. La pornografía comenzó siendo una solución a los males de la vida, una solución con la letra “s” minúscula.  Y tú sabes, algo que yo he compartido aquí recientemente con algunas personas es que el rechazo es una emoción muy negativa. Cuando yo me siento rechazado por algo, por alguien, lo que sea, yo siento la necesidad de escapar, y nunca antes el porno me ha rechazado. Así que es una ruta fácil y rápida a la que regresar, pero me ha decepcionado mucho después de cada “aceptación” que sucedió. Así que, ¿es un problema? ¡Claro! Lo es porque no es una solución real. Es una solución vacía, muy vacía y falsa. ¿eso responde a la pregunta allí?

Tara: Sí. Bueno, yo pienso que nosotros vamos a este punto desde una perspectiva diferente de la que tú hayas podido escuchar antes. Nosotros podemos poner los datos y las investigaciones que sugieren que el porno es muy dañino para la salud mental. Es completamente dañino para las relaciones comprometidas. En general, es perjudicial para la sociedad porque la pornografía aumenta cosas como el tráfico sexual y existe una conexión entre muchos otros males sociales con los que nos enfrentamos. Sin embargo, creo que si lo abordamos desde esta perspectiva de "¿Es mala la pornografía?" pero, "¿Cuáles son los frutos del porno?" Podrías decir, si te entiendo bien, Justin, que la pornografía fue la solución que se convirtió en tu problema.

Justin: Así es. Yo creo que es una muy buena manera de decirlo. El Porno fue la solución o una solución, pero fue la más rápida y fácil solución para aliviar los problemas que yo enfrentaba con las emociones negativas. Pero muy pronto, me decepcionó y se convirtió en mi maestro, en lugar de mi calmante. Las emociones negativas que yo estaba sintiendo se convirtieron en mi maestro porque pronto se movieron de cuando yo me sentía rechazado a cuando yo me sentía orgulloso o cuando me sentía triste, cuando me siento feliz de adormecer y regular cualquier emoción que pareciera hacerme sentir incómodo. Básicamente, me retiraba de esas emociones y volvía a ese “atontamiento”, porque sentir era demasiado doloroso.

Tara: Kathy Kinghorn, quien es una terapeuta CSAT, explicó en la agenda de trabajo de mujeres el mes pasado que la adicción o las conductas adictivas aumentan el placer o reducen el dolor. Y eso es lo que tú estás diciendo Justin; realmente yo creo que hablas sobre el concepto de que la conducta, toda vez que sea maladaptativa, llega a ser una vía para que las personas puedan lidiar con su vida, con el aburrimiento, con el rechazo, con la ansiedad. Por un tiempo, logra jugar este papel de ser una solución. Roy Kim, quien fue nuestro invitado en el episodio anterior, posteó algo realmente grandioso hace algún tiempo en su Instagram, y quisiera leerlo ahora. Habla sobre esta idea de “¿Cuál es nuestra solución cuando nosotros lidiamos con nuestra vida diaria, con las subidas y bajadas?” El dijo, “Cuando yo tengo hambre, entonces yo como. Cuando yo tengo sed, yo bebo. Cuando yo tengo frío, yo me pongo alguna prenda. Cuando no tengo dinero, busco trabajo. Cuando me siento solo, porno. Cuando estoy ansioso, porno. Cuando estoy enojado, porno. Cuando me siento sobrepasado y abrumado, porno”. El dijo, es tiempo de reevaluar nuestras soluciones. ¿Qué piensas acerca de eso?

Justin: Sí, yo me identifico totalmente con eso y agregaría un par más. Tal como lo mencioné antes, cuando yo celebro, porno. Cuando estoy feliz, cuando estoy muy feliz, porno. Cuando me siento rechazado, como lo indiqué, porno; cualquier emoción.  La razón del por qué es porque al adicto que hay en mí le gusta el efecto de la pornografía, del sexo de todas las cosas relacionadas con ello. Esto me trae de regreso al Gran Libro de los Alcohólicos Anónimos en la página con el numeral romano 28, en la Opinión del Doctor. Yo quiero leer un párrafo aquí y esto también nos dirige a la pregunta de “¿Cómo habla, actúa y piensa la adicción?” y en este punto, yo cambiaré los pronombres para el “yo” y el “mí” porque esto me pertenece. Y yo invito a cualquiera a que lea este tipo de cosas a que no piense en los demás sino en sí mismo. Yo bebo o uso pornografía o actúo mal esencialmente porque me gusta el efecto producido por esa droga de elección. La sensación es tan elusiva que mientras yo puedo admitir que es dañina, yo sé que es dañina, yo sé que no es buena para mí – yo no puedo, luego de un tiempo, diferenciar lo que es cierto de lo que es falso. Este es el punto en el que comienza a ser mi maestro. Yo no puedo diferenciarlo más. Para mí, mi vida adicta parece como cualquier otra normal. Es lo único que se siente bien en ese momento. Se siente seguro. Yo me siento cansado, irritable y descontento a menos que lo haga de nuevo, que experimente la sensación de facilidad y confort, lo cual viene una vez que yo tome unas pocas bebidas, que vea unas pocas imágenes, haciendo, tú sabes, cualquiera que sea la acción que yo tome con lujuria, esas acciones que yo veo que otros toman con impunidad. Algunas personas pueden ver ocasionalmente porno, pueden ocasionalmente hacer cosas y no ser adictos y luego simplemente dejarlo. Desafortunadamente, yo no soy esa persona. Luego de haber sucumbido al deseo nuevamente, como les sucede a muchos, y de que se desarrolla el fenómeno del “anhelo” o “craving”, yo he pasado por las etapas bien conocidas de la juerga: emerjo arrepentido con la firme resolución de no volver a actuar. Esto ha sido repetido una y otra vez y a menos que yo pueda experimentar un profundo cambio psíquico, existe muy poca esperanza sobre mi recuperación. Yo actúo mal porque me gusta. Al adicto le gusta. No importa cuantas veces yo diga: “no, no quiero que me guste, esto es desagradable, no quiero que me guste”. La verdad es que, me gusta. Es una rápida y fácil solución y hasta que yo encuentre una alternativa que trabaje a cada momento, yo regresaré una y otra vez a esta solución. ¿Te imaginas eso?

Tara: De tal manera que en la explicación que Roy Kim brinda en su post de Instagram, él dice: “la adicción al porno usualmente tiene muy poco que ver con ser hipersexual, pervertido o un degenerado. Mucho más frecuentemente, tiene que ver con encontrar algo que de manera predecible y exitosa nos transporta afuera de un problema o de un estado de ánimo. Lo malo de eso es que no se aborda el problema o el estado de ánimo”. La solución no es simplemente detener el consumo del porno, dice Roy Kim, aunque esto es un primer paso fundamental, y lo que estoy oyendo de ti es que, hasta que nosotros encontremos mejores herramientas, el porno o la conducta adictiva continuará siendo la solución. ¿Estoy en lo correcto?

Justin: Así es, esa es mi experiencia. Absolutamente. Me gusta esto. La cosa mala es que el problema o el estado de ánimo no es dirigido cuando yo busco escapar a través de mi droga de elección, cualquiera que sea. Yendo un poco más en este camino de “oh, me gusta el aspecto y el color de las rosas. Pero en mi caso, cada vez que yo veo un rosal o huelo una rosa, no voy a quedarme allí olfateando y mirando las rosas sin parar hasta que mueran a finales de otoño, y luego más, durante todo el invierno, porque no puedo ver u oler las rosas”. Porque como un adicto, yo no puedo consumir mi droga de elección todo el tiempo, yo terminaré deprimido, voy a llorar hasta que pueda volver a ello. Otro ejemplo: a mí me encanta cortar el césped, pero una vez que empiece a cortar el césped, no voy a cortar el mío, el de mi vecino y todos los céspedes que encuentre hasta que haya destruido mi cortadora de césped. Pero en la lujuria, en el sexo, en la pornografía, yo voy a hacer eso. Yo solamente quiero mantenerme consumiendo hasta que todo esté destruido, yo mismo, mi familia, todo. Y entonces yo no seré capaz de detenerme hasta que haya acabado con todo, conmigo, mi dinero, mi honorabilidad, mi moral, todo lo que quieras decir. Como un adicto sin tratamiento, como uno que no ha logrado un cambio psíquico completo del que hablamos aquí, en la pregunta de opinión de médicos, a menos que mantenga ese cambio psíquico todos los días, pase lo que pase, desecho todo lo que es realmente muy importante, todo lo que yo realmente amo excepto por esa sensación de escape que es tan elusiva. Mientras yo admito que esto es dañino, yo no puedo diferenciar lo que es verdadero de lo falso. Tú sabes, no es una excusa porque yo aún sigo teniendo el 100% de elección para no entretener al pensamiento o para no iniciar la ritualización. Pero esa elección existe en un adicto, especialmente en un adicto activo, aunque sea sólo por milisegundos. Una vez que empiezo a tener ese pensamiento, tengo que cambiar inmediatamente o me dominará y ya no tendré elección. Necesito ese cambio psíquico completo. Y podemos hablar más sobre lo que eso significa en episodios futuros porque hay mucho de eso.

Tara: Sí. Nosotros regresaremos a esta pregunta inicial que estábamos dirigiendo: “¿es el uso del porno un problema? ¿Es malo el porno? Las personas bien intencionadas probablemente puedan citar información que pueda hablar tanto de un lado como de otro. Lo que nosotros queremos invitarte es a que, más que responder a la pregunta: “¿el porno es malo?”, te preguntes a ti mismo: “¿Cuáles son los frutos de ver pornografía?” ¿Es que acaso produce más o menos respeto? ¿Produce más respeto o menos respeto hacia los demás? ¿Aumenta o disminuye la conexión con Dios y con los otros, especialmente aquellos con quienes tenemos relaciones comprometidas, nuestros cónyuges, nuestros hijos? ¿Nos hace querer estar en un espacio donde nos conectamos de manera saludable o nos hace alejarnos y aislarnos? ¿La pornografía me está ayudando a crear la vida que quiero?

Gracias Justin, y o creo que esto es algo de lo que nosotros podríamos hablar por mucho tiempo. Pero yo pienso que esto nos brinda diferentes formas de considerar la pornografía y cómo la solución termina siendo el problema y las formas mal adaptativas de lidiar con la vida. 

Justin: Sí, por supuesto. Y espero seguir desarrollando esto durante el tiempo que estemos haciendo esto juntos. Esto va a estar muy bueno. Muchas gracias Tara.
