Tara and Justin talk with Jeni Brockbank, the spouse of a porn user, about how pornography has affected her, including the concept of betrayal trauma. Justin shares how  in hindsight he can see how it affected his family. Tara also shares her perspective as the daughter of a porn user.

Tara: Welcome to the Pathway to Recovery podcast. I am your host, Tara McCausland, and I have here with me Justin B, my co-host. Welcome Justin.

Justin: Thank you, Tara. Good to be here. 

Tara: We're excited to have Jeni Brockbank here with us. Jenny is actually a [00:01:00] member of the staff of SA Lifeline, but she's going to bring to the table today her strength, hope, and experience.

And today in our Q&A, we will be discussing the question, “Is there an effect on the spouse of a porn user?” And we felt like this was an important topic to discuss because there's plenty of conversation about the fact that, if we use porn on our own, it's just impacting us. We want to discuss whether or not that's true. So in addressing that question, “Is there an effect on the spouse of a porn user?” Jenny, what are your initial thoughts there?

Jeni: I can say as the spouse of a porn user, there absolutely are effects. And having been in thousands of recovery meetings, I'm not alone. So anybody listening who might feel like maybe they're unique if they're struggling, I just want to say, first of all, it's [00:02:00] okay. You're not alone, you're not crazy, and it makes sense that you're struggling. Living with a porn user, somebody who is compulsively using any kind of substance, is really chaos. And it doesn't always make sense because it shows up in these different sideways ways that we don't understand. We don't always see the effects. We don't see the acting out behavior, but we certainly feel it and it can feel unnerving, disturbing, distressing, stressful, for sure. 

Tara: Thank you. Justin, from a recovering addict's perspective, did you think that your behavior which I understand was in secret for the first 10 years of your marriage, did you think that your behavior, your porn use was having an effect on your spouse and on your relationship?

Justin: You know, I sure hoped not. And I didn't think it did. I thought it was just a me issue and that I was the [00:03:00] only one being damaged. I wasn't damaging anybody else. Her reaction to my disclosure was way more severe than I thought it would be, it really hit her a lot harder than I thought it would. But I still thought, for those next seven or eight years that I continued to struggle and not do anything in recovery, I still thought, “Hey, this, it's just pornography. I'm not involving anyone but myself and a screen, or myself and an object walking down the street, which is an awful way to say that, but that's how I thought.

Tara: So, Jeni, tell us more about how, in those years of not knowing about the behavior, what did your relationship look and feel like and why did it feel off?

Jeni: I would say it was so confusing because he [00:04:00] could show up pretty wonderfully and then really not, and it just didn't make sense. There were explosions about things that, to me, were not that big of a deal. There was a lack of showing up as a partner in basic things like finances or taking care of the home, and I didn't understand the reasons behind it and I just kind of wondered, “Is he just immature? What's going on here?”

Before I started recovery I had been in this for like 17 and a half years before understanding. So I just kind of learned to get by to try to make peace, to try to make our home as calm as possible. We have six children, so that's a really impossible ask. There's just no way around that.

But I did my best and so yeah, it [00:05:00] was just unstable. And like I said, he could show up wonderfully. He really could. He would take me on dates, he would open my car door. We would go to dinner a lot and just sit and have great conversations. So it was confusing because he could show up well sometimes and sometimes not, and I didn't know why. 

Tara: Can you flesh that out for us a little bit, Justin, why that might be?

Justin: Well, I can give it my best shot. I know some of my worst blind spots are right here looking right back at myself. But what Jenny mentioned really resonated with me in so many areas of my marriage.

In fact, I used this as a justifier: “Hey, we're going on date nights every week. I am taking care of the house. I'm earning money. I'm bringing home the money. I'm doing these things. I'm present for most of my kids' activities. But then I would disappear [00:06:00] and emotionally, I was gone. There was an emotional disconnect, although I felt there were the physical connection and the financial connection and all of these other connections.

I can't speak for my wife, but after disclosure and for a few years, she would say, “You know what? Things are starting to make sense now that I see what's going on. I'm starting to make connections that I couldn't make before with why there was a disconnect, why there was an absence in certain places.”

And that really actually hurt me when she'd say that. I was like, whoa. I thought I was hiding things way better than that. So that's my take on that from my own blindness, my own myopic view of it. 

Jeni: Yeah, that makes sense.

Tara: Well, I just want to insert something here. So we're talking specifically about the relationship between spouses, but I think we also do well to remember that in [00:07:00] every relationship there is an impact.

And so as the daughter of a recovering addict, for years I didn't know what was going on, but I also felt that disconnect. My father could engage well in certain settings. He could be very sociable at church or in community functions, but when we’d get home, he'd go and sit behind a newspaper or he'd turn on the game and I just could not connect.

As I've heard him speak in recent years, I understand that it was his feelings of hypocrisy in those family settings that kept him from wanting to connect, that it heightened his sense of hypocrisy in his most important relationships. And so I think as you speak to that, Jenny, like they could be on some days or in certain relationships. But in those most critical times, when you needed the connection, you needed the support, I know that as a [00:08:00] child, as a daughter, I so often just felt like I couldn't access him and I wasn't sure why. 

Jeni: For sure. That's very relatable and I love that you bring in kids. My kids are struggling right now as well, so I love that you give them a voice as well, Tara. 

Justin: My youngest child is now 16 and my next youngest child had a totally different experience with their father than my oldest two who are now 23, 24 years old. And with those two, I was totally disconnected for most of their formative years until they were 15, 16 years old.

And yeah, I coached my son's baseball team all the time. But I connected more with the other kids than I did with my own son. And I think it was that hypocrisy thing that I felt like I wasn't worthy to connect with them in that way. And so I backed off. And that is a painful realization [00:09:00] and one that I've had. But you just hit me again with that memory which I hate having those feelings, but it is good to remember that it's not just me. It affects my spouse, my children. It affects other relationships outside of that, that I think have zero correlation with my life, but I still affect those people. So, thank you for sharing that.

Tara: Thank you, Justin. Thank you for sharing a vulnerable point with us. 

So we're going to go more into really what the effect is to the spouse in later Q&As. But Jeni, do you want to put a name to what it is that you experience and share a little bit more information about that? 

Jeni: We in the recovery community often refer to it as betrayal trauma. And the interesting thing is so many of us, because we are suffering in silence, we don't understand that others are also [00:10:00] suffering.

I know you had Barbara Steffens on recently and Dr. Kevin Skinner has a similar statistic, but it's about 70%. And depending on the study, sometimes higher rates of women who do struggle with PTSD type symptoms after a sexual discovery or disclosure. So what we're looking at is a severe mental health crisis that is going on that's not recognized, but that is really, really harmful.

In a BYU study recently they talked about how one third of married men are compulsively viewing pornography daily or weekly. So if we're looking at that and that women are struggling as we receive disclosures, (and this can go for men too who might be struggling when they receive a disclosure) but for me as a woman, I'll just use that. When we receive [00:11:00] a disclosure or a discovery and it just kind of rocks our world and it's like an earthquake hit with all these aftershocks and we don't know when they are going to come. We're struggling, often in silence and isolation. I did it, like I said, for 17 and a half years. I'm not alone in that.

There's so much shame around the subject that nobody wants to say, “My spouse has been unfaithful. My spouse has been looking at other women and I don't measure up to what I think that they're wanting or whatever. It is a really, really painful thing. And so we have women who maybe aren't sleeping, who forget to eat. Or maybe it's like their bodies say, “I'm going to eat a lot because of the trauma and the stress.” Or their thoughts, mind did this for sure, are on a loop. You cannot get out of this loop that just seems to never end --nightmares, awful [00:12:00] nightmares that can't be controlled and that can make sleep difficult, even wanting to go to sleep.

There's often this feeling of not being safe no matter where we're at. It is a distressing feeling. And because we're not necessarily understanding this is trauma, that this is a real problem. This is not because I'm crazy, which is what I would think - “I must be nuts or something.” Because of that, it's just unsettling. I know people who have been suicidal during disclosures and discoveries. It is a very, very distressing ordeal to go through. 

Tara: Well, thank you so much Jeni and Justin for sharing some of your experience of this with us. So, is there an effect on the spouse of a porn user? An absolute yes.

Jeni: Yes.

Jeni: Yo puedo hablar como la esposa de un consumidor de pornografía, y absolutamente existen efectos; y habiendo estado en miles de reuniones de recuperación, yo no estoy sola. Así que cualquiera que esté escuchando esto y que pueda sentirse como que quizás es única en lo que está luchando, yo quiero decirle, antes que nada, que está bien. Tú No estás sola, tú NO estás loca y tiene mucho sentido que tú estés luchando. El vivir con un consumidor de pornografía, con alguien que está usando compulsivamente cualquier tipo de sustancia, es realmente caótico. Y no siempre tiene sentido porque se muestra de diferentes formas que no entendemos. Nosotros no siempre vemos los efectos, no siempre vemos la conducta problemática, pero ciertamente que podemos sentirlo y esto puede sentirse desconcertante, perturbador, muy estresante, angustiante, sin duda.

Tara: Gracias a tí. Justin, desde la perspectiva de un adicto en recuperación, ¿piensas que tu conducta, la cual entiendo que estuvo en secreto durante 10 años de tu matrimonio, piensas que tu conducta, tu consumo de pornografía tuvo algún efecto en tu esposa o en tu relación?

Justin: Tú sabes, yo hubiera deseado que no, y no pensé que lo hiciera. Yo pensaba que simplemente era un problema mía y que yo era el único que estaba siendo dañado, yo no estaba dañando a nadie más. Su reacción a mi descubrimiento fue mucho más severa de lo que yo hubiera pensado que podía ser, realmente la golpeó a ella mucho más fuerte de lo que yo hubiera pensado. Pero yo todavía seguía pensando, en los siguientes 7 u 8 años en los que continuaba luchando y no tenía nada de recuperación, yo aún pensaba, “hey, esto es solamente pornografía”. Yo no estoy afectando a nadie más que a mí mismo y a mi mirada, o a mí mismo y a un objeto caminando en la calle, lo cual es una forma ridícula de decirlo, pero así era como yo pensaba.

Tara: Bien, Jeni, cuéntanos un poco más sobre cómo, en aquellos años de no saber nada sobre la conducta, cómo se veía tu relación, ¿cómo se sentía y qué te hizo sentir?

Jeni: Yo diría que todo esto era muy confuso porque él podía mostrarse de manera maravillosa y luego realmente no, así que eso no tenía sentido. Había explosiones sobre algunas cosas que, para mí, no eran gran cosa; faltaba que se mostrase como un verdadero socio o compañero en cosas básicas como las finanzas o cuidar de las cosas de la casa, y yo no comprendía las razones detrás de ello así que solamente podía imaginar, “¿es él solamente un inmaduro? ¿qué está pasando aquí? Antes de que yo comenzara la recuperación yo había estado en esto por un espacio de 17 años y medio antes de que comprendiera. Así que aprendí a arreglármelas para tratar de hacer las paces, para tratar de que nuestro hogar fuera lo más tranquilo posible. Nosotros tenemos 6 hijos, así que era una pregunta realmente imposible. No había forma de hacerlo, pero hice mi mejor esfuerzo y sí, esto era inestable. Y tal como yo dije, él podía mostrarse maravilloso, él realmente podía; él me llevaba a las citas, me abría la puerta del carro; podíamos ir a cenar y nada más sentarnos, tener grandes conversaciones, así que esto era confuso porque él podía mostrarse muy bien algunas veces, pero otras veces no, y yo no sabía por qué.

Tara: ¿Puedes explicar eso un poco por nosotras Justin?, ¿Puedes hacerlo?

Justin: Bien, puedo hacer mi mejor esfuerzo. Yo sé que algunas de mis peores conductas ciegas son aquellas justo aquí viendo hacia atrás en mí mismo. Pero lo que Jeny mencionó realmente resonó conmigo en muchas áreas de mi matrimonio. De hecho, yo solía utilizar esto como un justificador, “hey, nosotros tenemos citas nocturnas todas las semanas. Yo cuido de la casa, estoy ganando dinero y estoy trayendo a casa el dinero. Yo estoy haciendo todas estas cosas; además estoy presente en la mayoría de las actividades de mis hijos”. Pero luego yo podía desaparecer y emocionalmente, yo ya me había ido; había una desconexión emocional, aunque yo sintiera que había una conexión física y una conexión financiera y todos esos otros tipos de conexiones. Yo no puedo hablar por mi esposa, pero luego del descubrimiento y durante algunos años, ella diría, “¿sabes qué? Las cosas están comenzando a tener un sentido para mí ahora que yo estoy viendo lo que pasa. Estoy comenzando a hacer conexiones que yo no podría haber hecho antes porque había una desconexión, porque había una ausencia en ciertos lugares”. Y eso realmente me afectó, me dolió cuando ella dijo eso; yo estaba como guau. Yo pensé que estaba escondiendo las cosas mejor de lo que en realidad lo hacía; así que esa es mi opinión desde mi propia ceguera, mi visión miope del asunto.

Jeni: Claro, eso tiene sentido.

Tara: Bien, yo quiero introducir algo aquí. Nosotros estamos hablando específicamente sobre la relación entre esposos, pero yo pienso que también es bueno que recordemos que, en cada relación, siempre habrá un impacto. Como hija de un adicto en recuperación, yo no supe qué era lo que estaba ocurriendo, pero también me sentía muy desconectada. Mi padre podía desenvolverse muy bien en ciertos entornos; él podía ser muy sociable en la iglesia o en las funciones de la comunidad, pero cuando llegábamos a casa, él se iba y se sentaba detrás de un periódico o comenzaba a ver un partido y yo simplemente no podía conectarme. Tal como yo lo he escuchado en recientes años, ahora comprendo que eran sus sentimientos de hipocresía en aquellos asuntos familiares lo que lo mantenía alejado de conectarse, lo que reforzó su sentido de hipocresía en sus relaciones más importantes. Y yo pienso, conforme tú hablas esto Jenny, como que ellos podrían estar algunos días en ciertas relaciones, pero en los momentos más críticos, cuando tú necesitabas esa conexión, cuando tú necesitabas ese apoyo, yo sabía que como niña, como hija, yo simplemente sentía que yo no podía tener acceso a él y no estaba segura de por qué.

Jeni: Claro. Esto es completamente identificable y me encanta que hayas traído a colación a los niños. Mis niños también están pasando apuros en este momento, así que me encanta que también les des una voz, Tara.

Justin: Mi hijo más pequeño tiene ahora 16 años y mi siguiente hijo más joven tuvo una experiencia totalmente diferente con su padre que mis primeros hijos, que ahora tienen 23 y 24 años. Y con estos dos, yo estaba totalmente desconectado durante la mayoría de sus años formativos hasta que ellos estaban en los 15, 16 años. Y claro, yo entrené al equipo de baseball de mi hijo todo el tiempo, pero yo me conectaba más con los otros niños que lo que me conectaba con mi propio hijo; y yo pienso que era la hipocresía que yo sentía lo que no facilitaba que yo conectara con ellos de ninguna manera. Y entonces retrocedí; y esto es algo que dolorosamente he comprendido, pero ciertamente que tú me acabas de golpear de nuevo con esa memoria que yo odio sobre tener esos sentimientos, pero es bueno recordar que no se trata solo de mí. Esto afecta a mi esposa, a mis hijos, afecta otras relaciones afuera, que yo pienso que tienen cero correlación con mi esposa, pero aún así afectó a esas personas, así que gracias por compartir esto.

Tara: Gracias Justin, gracias por compartir este punto vulnerable con nosotros. Así que vamos a profundizar más en realmente cuáles son los efectos en la esposa en los siguientes episodios de Preguntas y Respuestas. Ahora bien, Jeni, ¿quieres poner un nombre a lo que es tu experiencia y compartir un poco más de información al respecto?

Jeni: Nosotros en la comunidad en recuperación frecuentemente nos referimos a esto como el trauma por traición o por engaño. Y las cosas interesantes es que muchas de nosotras, debido a que estamos sufriendo en silencio, no comprendemos que otras también estén sufriendo. Yo sé que tú estuviste recientemente con Barbara Steffens y el Dr. Kevin Skinner tienen estadísticas similares, pero es acerca del 70%. Y dependiendo del estudio, algunas veces incluso hay tasas más altas de mujeres que están luchando con los síntomas similares al TEPT luego de un descubrimiento sexual o una revelación. Así que lo que estamos observando es una severa crisis de salud mental que está ocurriendo y no está siendo reconocida, pero que es realmente muy, muy dañina. En un estudio reciente de BYU ellos hablaban acerca de que un tercio de los maridos casados están viendo pornografía de manera compulsiva diariamente o semanalmente. Así que si nosotros vemos eso y que las mujeres están luchando conforme reciben esas revelaciones (y esto también puede suceder con hombres que estén luchando luego de recibir una revelación) pero para mí, como mujer, yo solamente mencionaré eso. Cuando nosotras recibimos una revelación o un descubrimiento es algo así como que algo golpea nuestro mundo, es como un terremoto que golpeará con todas sus réplicas y nosotros no sabemos cuándo vendrá. Nosotras estamos luchando, frecuentemente en silencio y en soledad. Yo lo hice, como mencioné, por 17 años y medio. Yo no estoy sola en esto. Existe mucha vergüenza alrededor del hecho de que nadie quiere decir, “mi esposo ha sido un infiel. Mi esposo ha estado viendo a otras mujeres y yo no estoy a la altura de lo que yo creo que ellos quieren o lo que sea”. Esto es realmente algo muy doloroso, así que nosotros tenemos a mujeres que pueden estar teniendo un muy mal sueño o no estar durmiendo, que olvidan comer; o quizás es como si sus cuerpos dijeran, “yo voy a comer mucho debido al trauma y al estrés”. O en sus propios pensamientos, hicieron esto con seguridad, están embebidas en un bucle. Tú no puedes salir de este bucle que parece que nunca terminará, -pesadillas, pesadillas horribles que no pueden ser controladas y que dificultan mucho el poder dormir, incluso aunque uno quiera ir a dormir. Frecuentemente este sentimiento de no sentirse segura, sin importar en donde estén, es un sentimiento muy estresante; y debido a que nosotras no necesariamente comprendemos que esto es un trauma, entonces es un problema real. Esto NO es porque yo estoy loca, lo cual es algo que fácilmente podría pensar, -“debo estar loca o algo así”. Porque por eso es simplemente inquietante. Yo conozco a personas que han tenido comportamientos suicidas durante las revelaciones y los descubrimientos. Es una prueba muy, muy difícil de tolerar y pasar.

Tara: Bien, muchas gracias Jeni y Justin por compartir algo de sus experiencias con nosotros. Así que, ante la pregunta, ¿existe algún efecto en la esposa de un consumidor de pornografía? La respuesta es un absoluto sí.

Jeni: Así es.
