Q&A - Should we call it an addiction?

How is an addiction different from a bad habit? Defining pornography and sexual compulsivity as an addiction can be difficult for both the struggling individual and their partner. Tara and Justin discuss 3 reasons why it can be helpful in the recovery process to label this problem as an addiction.

Q&A: Should we call it addiction?

Tara: [00:00:00] Welcome to the Pathway to Recovery podcast. I am Tara McCausland, and I'm here with my co-host Justin B. Hey Justin, thanks for being here.

Justin: Thank you, Tara. I'm happy to be here. 

Tara: So the question that we are addressing today is a big one. It is, should we call it an addiction? And speaking of it, should we call pornography [00:01:00] and sexual compulsivity an addiction? So what are your initial thoughts on that?

Justin: You know, Tara, I think the short answer and simple answer to that is yes; but I think there's a lot of tangents to that, that a lot of people can take. But in my own experience, for me as a struggling individual, when I am in the depths of my behaviors, for me to acknowledge that, “hey, this is probably an addiction, or this is something I need to treat, at least as an addiction,” is vital for me to have successful long-term recovery.

Tara: We recognize the challenge associated with labeling this behavior as an addiction, and we want to be empathetic to that challenge. Roy Kim, in our episode with him, talked about the difficulty that partners might have with labeling this as an addiction because it means to them that this is going to continue to be a problematic behavior. And so Roy talked about how we have to be really [00:02:00] sensitive in approaching this with partners. I appreciated him bringing that up. That's an important component of this discussion. 

Justin: Yeah. And in my most recent conversation with Steven, who is an addict, he mentioned how he did not want to believe that he was an addict because he felt it was shaming. And I can understand that. I, for many years, said, “There's no way I'm an addict.” This concept of powerlessness, this concept of I'm not one of these people that's on the streets and I don't look this way. I don't look like what I envision an addict looking like. I don't want this label and I totally get it. But uh, guess what? I am an addict and that's okay. Now I'm okay with it. 

Tara: We also want to recognize that there are some individuals in the therapeutic and faith communities that are reluctant to call this an addiction. But here at SA Lifeline, we draw a pretty hard line on that and [00:03:00] we won't shy away from the fact that we call this pornography and sexual addiction. And so in the Q&A today we're going to just address a few reasons why we feel, from our experience working with hundreds and hundreds of people who have struggled with this behavior, why it's helpful actually in the short and long term to call this an addiction.

So the first reason would be that if we call it an addiction, we acknowledge our reality. So in our SAL book, on page three, there's actually a great metaphor that could be used to help us understand this. So it reads, “Search and Rescue Training teaches that one of the most important things a person can do when lost in the wilderness is to stop and say out loud, ‘I am lost.’

This verbal acknowledgement shifts the [00:04:00] panicked mind into a state where wiser choices can be made. The person won't hide from search parties, they want to be found. This same principle applies to individuals seeking recovery from sexual addiction.”

Justin, what are your thoughts about that?

Justin: You know, I think there's a lot of power to that. I remember, and I may have shared this before, but I'm gonna share it again because it's so powerful - the first couple of times I went into a 12 step meeting, I refused to say anything other than, “Hey, I'm Justin.” And finally I started to see that others around this room were just like me, and they were saying, “I'm an addict.”

And they were finding peace and rescue, like in this analogy, that I was not finding, I was still dying. And finally the first time I said, “Hey, I'm Justin and I think I might be an addict.” All of a sudden it was like a literal weight came off my shoulders, like a literal door opened up in front of me when I [00:05:00] admitted that, hey, there is hope.

And the things that these other people in this room are demonstrating, that they're experiencing, I can experience too. And that was a massive step in my own recovery journey, was that admission that I'm lost. I'm an addict. I can't do this on my own. It was a miracle. 

Tara: Yeah. Well, and I think this concept of the person stops hiding from search parties when they can acknowledge that they're lost. They want to be found. And I think that that's very similar to how we are when we're struggling with a behavior that can be very isolating and shaming. When we can admit that we have a problem and that this problem is killing us.

Justin: Yeah. Me wandering in the wilderness of my behaviors, of my addictive behaviors beforehand, I was definitely, whenever there was help [00:06:00] that was calling my name, I was running into a cave and curling up and hiding. I was not running to them for help because I was too ashamed.

Why am I even in this wilderness? I have to get myself out of it. I can't let anybody else see me in this wilderness. But as soon as I recognized that I'm lost, that I needed help, then the recovery started, the rescue started happening. 

Tara: We want people to understand that calling this an addiction is not an excuse. It does not justify the behavior ever, but it does help us make more sense of a persistent behavior that is ruining someone's life and the lives of those that they love. 

And so I think, just like Roy Kim said, a lot of people who suffer from these types of issues do find relief in calling it in addiction because they recognize this is not about me not having enough willpower or just being perverted or gross. I have an illness of sorts that can be [00:07:00] treated if I will seek out the right help. So that's our first reason why we would consider it helpful to call it an addiction. We acknowledge our reality when we call it what it is. So reason two when we call it an addiction, we acknowledge the significant brain component that drives the behavior.

So there is a fantastic quote again from our SAL book, page five, from a well-known doctor in this field. His name is Donald Hilton, and he is a Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and this is what he said. 

He said that “… addiction occurs when this natural drive for pleasure gets out of balance and instead of simply motivating us, it dominates and controls. 

Such a person realizes they can't quit smoking the cigarette or joint. Or they must have that shot of alcohol, or they must find a pornographic video to [00:08:00] masturbate to. Because if they don't, they sense a growing tension and obsession, a brain itch of sorts, which initially whispers, then calls, then shouts, and finally commands that person to act out in their addiction of choice, thus temporarily relieving what has become an absolutely unbearable tension.”  Thoughts, Justin? 

Justin: And I can totally identify with that itch, that brain itch and I call it, I now call this voice with this cacophony of voices in my head, The Liar. This is the liar in the back of my head. And it is a compelling liar, not just because it compels me to do things or it tries to anyway. But it's the arguments that it makes, the justifications that that liar makes in my head are so loud, so convincing. And even like it said in this quote, commanding, saying, “You will do this because it's okay this time, it's [00:09:00] different this time. It's not, you're not gonna hurt anybody this time. You aren't gonna feel bad this time and just like every other time.”

It lets me down, you know, everything is temporarily relieved, but then comes back to brutality and just shame and self-loathing. So yeah, I can totally identify with that voice, that itch. 

Tara: Thanks for sharing that. So our last reason, and it's similar to the first reason - when we call it an addiction, we're going to treat it differently and we did talk about this to some extent with our guest, Roy Kim. Again, we might struggle calling it an addiction, but if we treat it like an addiction, we are going to seek out different help.

What does the help look like? What do the resources look like for someone who is dealing with an addiction versus someone who's dealing with say, a bad habit? 

Justin: Yeah, good question, Tara. I think in my [00:10:00] experience you know, I thought that I just had a bad habit in my behaviors prior to recovery. I think they looked very similar.

You know, I would seek counsel from, I could go to a therapist, I could read all of the books. I could go see an ecclesiastical leader and share things, and I could pray and I could serve. I could do all of these things. But I did those things with the intention of overcoming, of being stronger than the pull of the behaviors of the brain chemistry. I thought I could be stronger than that by doing these things. 

And what I've since learned is that a lot of the actions are very similar, but the focus is different. I'm not trying to muscle my way through the temptations, the triggers. By doing these things, I'm doing these things because it brings power [00:11:00] to me that is beyond my own.

I know in and of myself, I cannot do this on my own. I have to bring in others, whether that's my higher power, whether that's a sponsor, whether that's a fellowship of brothers who are walking through the same thing. That I can and will reach out on the phone and say, “Hey, I'm struggling. Can we talk?” and I think that's where it happens.

I think the breaking of a bad habit is done largely in isolation, in the cave, in the wilderness, hiding from those that are trying to save. And treating it as an addiction brings it into a community of people and saying, “I need help.” And that's kind of my experience with it. 

Tara: Awesome. Thank you so much, Justin.

I really appreciate you bringing in your personal experience with this. So to our listeners, if you are in this camp of struggling to acknowledge this concept of addiction, we might invite you to continue to educate yourself and learn [00:12:00] about addiction. I think sometimes it's just our misconceptions about what addiction is and what it isn't that keep us from wanting to call it, really what it is - a behavior that, as Justin said, we cannot overcome on our own. 

And that would be a bad habit, right? Something that we might be able to, with maybe some self-help books and a coach, overcome. But addiction will compel us to seek for different resources and different types of help.

I think bottom line, what all of us want is healing. We want peace. We want to feel connected in our relationships. And our experience at SA Lifeline suggests that when we call it what it is, an addiction to pornography and sex or lust, we will find the tools and we will get the help that healing requires. 

Justin: Now that I admit and own that I have an addiction, [00:13:00] that I can't do this on my own, as mentioned before, I'm free. I have peace in my life. When before I thought, “No, this is a habit that I have to get through on my own,” I never ever, ever felt peace. I never felt serenity. I never felt the happy, joyous, and free that is promised to those in recovery.

When I was white knuckling through it, I was miserable. It was worse than anything. And now as I admit and own that I'm an addict, I no longer feel shame. I no longer feel that stress that was always chewing at me, that brain itch that was just always gnawing at me. I can feel peace and serenity one day at a time.

Justin: Gracias Tara, estoy muy contento de estar aquí.

Justin: Tú sabes Tara, yo pienso que la respuesta corta y simple es que sí; pero también pienso que hay una gran cantidad de tangentes al respecto que muchas personas pueden tomar. Pero yo en mi propia experiencia, para mí como una lucha individual, cuando yo estoy en las profundidades de mis conductas, para mí el conocimiento de que, “oye, esto es probablemente una adicción o esto es algo que necesito tratar, al menos como una adicción”, es vital para mí para tener una recuperación exitosa a largo plazo.

Tara: Nosotros reconocemos los cambios asociados con el etiquetar esta conducta como una adicción, y queremos ser empáticos con este cambio. Justin: Sí, y en mi más reciente conversación con Steven, quien es un adicto, él mencionó cómo es que él no quería creer que él era un adicto porque se sentía muy avergonzado; y yo puedo comprender eso. Yo, por muchos años dije, “no hay manera alguna en la que yo sea adicto”. Este concepto de impotencia, este concepto de “yo no soy una de esas personas que andan en las calles, y yo no me miro así; no tengo el aspecto que imagino de un adicto y no quiero esta etiqueta y la entiendo totalmente”. Pero bueno, ¿sabes qué? Yo soy un adicto y está bien; ahora yo estoy bien con ello.

Tara: Nosotros también queremos reconocer que hay algunas personas en las comunidades terapéuticas y espirituales que se resisten a llamar a esto como una adicción. Pero aquí, en SA Lifeline, nosotros dibujamos una línea dura respecto a ello y no nos avergonzamos del hecho de que llamemos a esto pornografía y adicción sexual. Así que en el programa de Preguntas y Respuestas (P-R) hoy vamos a discutir algunas razones de por qué nosotros sentimos, desde nuestra experiencia de trabajo con cientos y cientos de personas que han luchado con esta conducta, por que es de mucha ayuda actualmente tanto a corto como a largo plazo, llamar a esto una adicción. Así que la primera razón sería que si nosotros lo llamamos una adición, estamos siendo conscientes de nuestra realidad; en nuestro libro de SAL, en la página 3, hay una gran metáfora que podría ser utilizada para ayudarnos a comprender esto; ahí se lee: “El entrenamiento en la búsqueda y Rescate nos enseña que una de las cosas más importantes que una persona puede hacer cuando está perdido en el desierto es detenerse y decir en voz alta: yo estoy perdido. Esta aceptación verbal cambia la mente en pánico por un estado en donde se pueden realizar elecciones más sabias; la persona no se esconderá de los grupos de búsqueda, más bien la persona quiere ser encontrada por dichos grupos. El mismo principio se aplica a todos aquellos individuos que están buscando la recuperación de una adicción sexual”. Justin, ¿qué piensas acerca de eso?

Justin: Tú sabes, yo pienso que hay un gran poder en ello. Yo recuerdo y puedo haber compartido esto antes, pero voy a compartirlo de nuevo porque es muy poderoso, -las primeras dos veces que yo fui a una reunión de los 12 pasos, yo me negué a decir nada más que no fuera, “hola, soy Justin” y finalmente comencé a ver a otros alrededor de ese cuarto, que eran como yo, y ellos decían, “yo soy un adicto”. Y ellos encontraban paz y alivio, como en esta analogía, yo no estaba buscando, estaba muriendo; y finalmente la primera vez que yo dije, “hey, yo soy Justin y creo que puedo ser un adicto”. De repente, fue como si un peso literal se hubiera quitado de mis hombros, como si literalmente una puerta se abriera frente a mí cuando yo lo admití, admití que hay una esperanza. Y todas las cosas que esas otras personas en esa reunión están demostrando, que ellos están experimentando, yo también puedo experimentarlas; así que fue un paso masivo en mi propia jornada de recuperación, el admitir que yo estaba perdido; que soy un adicto. Yo no puedo hacer esto solo, fue un milagro.

Tara: Oh sí. Bueno, yo creo que este concepto de que la persona deja de esconderse de los equipos de búsqueda cuando son conscientes que están perdidos; ellos quieren ser encontrados, y yo pienso que es algo muy similar a cómo estamos nosotros cuando luchamos con una conducta que puede ser muy desoladora y vergonzosa; cuando nosotros podemos admitir que tenemos un problema y que este problema nos está matando.

Justin: Sí, así es. Yo estaba vagando en el desierto de mis conductas, de mis comportamientos adictivos de antemano, y definitivamente, cada vez que había algún tipo de ayuda y que decían mi nombre, yo corría hacia una cueva y me acurrucaba y me escondía. Yo no estaba corriendo hacia ellos por ayuda porque me sentía muy avergonzado. ¿por qué estoy yo aún en este desierto? Tengo que salir de esto, y no puedo dejar que nadie más me vea en este desierto. Pero tan pronto como reconocí que estaba perdido, que necesitaba ayuda, entonces comenzó la recuperación, el rescate comenzó a ocurrir.

Tara: Nosotros queremos que las personas comprendan que el llamar a esto una adicción no es una excusa; no justifica de ninguna manera la conducta, pero ayuda a que seamos más sensibles sobre una conducta persistente que está arruinando la vida de alguien y las vidas de aquellos a los que ama. Así que yo pienso, justo como Roy Kim lo dijo, que muchas personas que sufren de este tipo de situaciones encuentran alivio al llamarlo una adicción porque ellos reconocen que no se trata sólo de ellos, de no tener suficiente fuerza y voluntad o simplemente de ser pervertidos o asquerosos; yo tengo una enfermedad del tipo que puede ser tratada y busco la ayuda correcta. Así que esta es nuestra primera razón del por qué nosotros deberíamos considerar útil el llamarlo una adicción. Nosotros conocemos nuestra realidad cuando lo llamamos como es. La razón número dos es que cuando nosotros lo llamamos una adicción, conocemos y comprendemos el significativo componente cerebral que dirige esta conducta; y aquí hay una fantástica cita de nuestro libro de SAL, página 5, de un doctor muy conocido en este campo; su nombre es Donald Hilton y él es Profesor de Neurocirugía en la Universidad de Texas del Centro de Ciencias de la Salud en San Antonio, y esto es lo que él dijo: “… la adicción ocurre cuando esta vía natural de placer se sale del balance y en vez de simplemente motivarnos, nos domina y nos controla. Así que la persona se da cuenta que no puede dejar de fumar el cigarrillo o el porro de marihuana; o necesitan tener un trago de alcohol, o necesitan encontrar un video pornográfico o masturbarse. Porque si ellos no lo hacen, existe un sentimiento de creciente tensión y obsesión, una especie de picazón cerebral, que inicialmente comienza como un susurro, luego llama, luego grita y finalmente le ordena a la persona que actúe en su adicción de elección, por lo que por consiguiente alivia temporalmente lo que había llegado a ser una tensión absolutamente insoportable”. ¿Qué piensas, Justin?

Justin: Yo puedo identificarme totalmente con esa picazón, lo que pica en el cerebro y llama; ahora llamo a esta voz con esta cacofonía de voces en mi cabeza, el mentiroso. Este es el mentiroso en el fondo de mi cabeza, y es un mentiroso convincente porque no solamente me obliga a hacer cosas o si no, de todas maneras, lo intenta. Pero son los argumentos que presenta, las justificaciones que ese mentiroso presenta en mi cabeza y que son muy fuertes y convincentes. E incluso, como dice en esta cita, intentará decir: “tú harás esto porque está bien esta vez, esta vez es diferente. Y no, no lastimarás a nadie esta vez. Esta vez no te sentirás mal, como ha ocurrido todas las otras veces”. Me decepciona, tú sabes, todo es aliviado temporalmente, pero luego viene de regreso a la brutalidad, la vergüenza y el autodesprecio. Así que yo puedo identificarme totalmente con esa voz, con esa picazón.

Tara: Gracias por compartir esto. Así que nuestra última razón, que es similar a la primera razón, es que cuando nosotros lo llamamos una adicción, vamos a tratarlo de manera diferente, nosotros conversamos algo de esto con nuestro invitado, Roy Kim. De nuevo, nosotros debemos luchar con llamarlo una adicción, pero si nosotros lo tratamos como una adicción, entonces buscaremos una ayuda diferente. ¿Cómo es la ayuda? ¿Cómo son los recursos para alguien que está lidiando con una adicción comparado con alguien que está lidiando, digamos, con un mal hábito?

Justin: Sí, buena pregunta Tara. Yo pienso en mi experiencia, tú sabes, yo pensaba que simplemente tenía un mal hábito en mis conductas antes de la recuperación, y pienso que se veían muy parecidos. Tú sabes, yo buscaría consejo, podría ir con un terapeuta, podría leer todos los libros; puedo ir a buscar a un líder eclesiástico y compartirle cosas y podría rezar y servir en la iglesia; yo podría hacer todas esas cosas. Pero hice todas esas cosas con la intención de superarme, de ser más fuerte que la fuerza de las conductas de la química cerebral; yo pensé que podría ser más fuerte que eso haciendo todas esas cosas; y lo que yo he aprendido es que una gran cantidad de acciones son muy parecidas, pero el enfoque es diferente. Yo no estoy tratando de abrirme camino a través de las tentaciones, de los desencadenantes. Al hacer estas cosas, lo hago porque me aporta un poder que está más allá de lo mío. Sé por mí mismo que no puedo hacer esto yo solo; tengo que apoyarme en otros, cualquiera que sea mi poder superior, cualquiera que sea mi padrino o patrocinador, o bien sea una comunidad de hermanos que están caminando hacia el mismo lugar y pasando por lo mismo. El que yo pueda comunicarme por teléfono y decir: “oye, estoy luchando. ¿Podemos hablar? Y yo pienso que esto es lo que ocurre. Yo pienso que romper los malos hábitos se hace en gran medida de forma aislada, en las cuevas, en el desierto, escondiéndose de aquellos que están tratando de salvarte, y tratarlo como una adicción lo lleva a uno a una comunidad de personas y a decir, “necesito ayuda”; y esa es mi experiencia con eso.

Tara: Maravilloso, muchas gracias Justin. Yo realmente aprecio tus aportes con tu experiencia personal con esto; así que para nuestros oyentes, si tú estás en este campo de luchar por reconocer este concepto de adicción, nosotros te invitamos a continuar educándote a ti mismo y aprendiendo acerca de la adicción; pienso que algunas veces es solamente nuestro mal concepto acerca de lo que es una adicción y de lo que no es lo que nos mantiene indecisos por llamarlo como lo que realmente es, -una conducta que, como Justin dijo, no podemos superar por nuestra cuenta. Y eso sería un mal hábito, ¿cierto? Algo que nosotros debemos ser capaces de superar, tal vez con algunos libros de autoayuda y un entrenador puede salir adelante. Pero la adicción nos obligará a buscar diferentes recursos y diferentes tipos de ayuda. Creo que en definitiva, lo que todos queremos es curarnos; nosotros queremos paz; queremos sentirnos conectados en nuestras relaciones, y nuestra experiencia en SA Lifeline sugiere que cuando nosotros lo llamamos como lo que es, una adicción a la pornografía y al sexo o a la lujuria, nosotros podremos encontrar las herramientas y obtendremos la ayuda que una sanación requiere.

Justin: Ahora que yo he admitido por mí mismo que tengo una adicción, y que sé que yo no puedo hacer esto por mí mismo como lo mencioné anteriormente; yo soy libre. Yo tengo paz en mi vida, cuando antes yo pensaba, “no, esto es un hábito que tengo que vencer por mí mismo”, nunca, nunca sentí paz; nunca sentí serenidad, nunca me sentí feliz, gozoso y libre que es aquello prometido a todos los que están en recuperación. Cuando yo estaba aplicando mano dura a esto, yo era miserable; era peor que cualquier otra cosa, pero ahora que yo admito por mí mismo que soy un adicto, no me siento avergonzado; yo no he sentido más ese estrés que siempre me estaba rondando, esa picazón del cerebro que siempre me atormentaba; yo ahora puedo sentir paz y serenidad, un día a la vez.
